Hey friends! If you’re like me, you love a sparkling clean bathroom but hate using harsh chemical cleaners that leave behind a fake ‘lemony’ smell. As a busy mom of three, I’m always looking for natural cleaning solutions that get the job done without hurting my family or the environment. That’s why I’m excited to share my homemade no-scrub soap scum remover recipe with you today!

Soap scum buildup can make any bathroom feel grimy. It leaves your sinks, tubs, and showers looking dull and dirty. Commercial soap scum removers rely on strong acids and fumes to break down the scum, which can aggravate breathing issues. Plus, they often contain toxic ingredients! Yuck.
The great news is you can easily make a safe, eco-friendly soap scum remover right in your own home. My recipe uses just three simple ingredients – baking soda, vinegar, and lemon essential oil. Baking soda is a natural abrasive that lifts away soap scum, while vinegar dissolves it. The lemon oil adds a light, uplifting citrus scent without any artificial fragrances.
Together, these three ingredients create a fizzy cleaner that breaks down soap scum so you don’t have to scrub! Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 15-20 drops lemon essential oil
Instructions:
1. Pour the baking soda into a medium bowl. Slowly stir in the vinegar until combined. The mixture will fizz and expand.
2. Once the fizzing slows down, add 15-20 drops of lemon essential oil and stir again. Adding the oil at this stage prevents the fizzing action from evaporating the oil.
3. Use a funnel to carefully pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Tightly screw on the spray nozzle.
4. Shake the bottle before each use to incorporate the ingredients.
5. To use, simply spray directly onto soap scum buildup in sinks, tubs, or showers. Do not rinse. Allow the cleaner to sit and work its magic for at least 15 minutes.
6. Wipe away the soap scum with a damp cloth or sponge. No heavy scrubbing needed!
7. For extra shiny results, follow up with a nontoxic glass cleaner like homemade vinegar spray.
This natural soap scum remover is safe for most bathroom surfaces including fiberglass tubs and showers, ceramic tile, porcelain sinks, chrome, and glass. It even helps remove rust stains from porcelain!
**Avoid using it on natural stone like granite or marble, as the acidity can etch delicate surfaces over time. Test in an inconspicuous area first.**
The recipe makes enough for several applications. Store leftover cleaner in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks. Give the bottle a good shake before each use.
I love that this soap scum remover is kid-safe, pet-safe, and septic-system safe. It leaves bathrooms sparkling without exposing my family to hazardous fumes or residues. Plus, it costs just pennies per bottle!
Removing soap scum doesn’t need to be a toxic chore. Whip up a batch of this all-natural cleaner and let the magic happen. No more wasting money on chemical-laden scrubbing! Your bathroom will look shiny and new in no time at all.
Let me know if you try this simple homemade recipe! I’d love to hear how it works in your home. And stay tuned for more of my favorite natural cleaning solutions made with ingredients from your pantry. Happy cleaning!
