WHAT IS THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE?
If you haven’t heard of it before, the Pomodoro technique is a simple time management system that helps you power through tasks, breaks, and distractions.
HOW DO YOU DO THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE?
The idea is to break your work time up into short, 25-minute bursts (called pomodoros) where you focus intently on one task. After each pomodoro, you then take a 5-minute break. After four pomodoros, you take a longer, 15-30 minute break.
Using a timer (traditionally shaped like a tomato or “pomodoro” in Italian) is key to this method. The timer keeps you focused and helps you avoid going-down-the-rabbit-hole distractions. Trust me, once that timer starts, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish! No more scrolling social media or online shopping temptations.
BENEFITS OF THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE
When I started using the Pomodoro technique, I wish I had discovered it sooner! Here are just a few of the benefits I’ve experienced:
- Increased productivity – I get so much more done in those 25-minute bursts than dragging tasks out. The timer lights a fire under me!
- Improved focus – Distractions seem to melt away when I know I have limited time. I can laser in on tasks.
- More energy – The method forces you to take regular breaks which has made my energy much more sustained rather than crashing mid-afternoon.
- Reduced stress – Having a plan and system in place helps lower my anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. I just take it pomodoro by pomodoro.
- Time management – I have a much better handle on where my time goes each day. Those 25-minute intervals add up!
The Pomodoro Technique: An Advantage for ADHD Productivity
The Pomodoro technique can be extremely beneficial for those with ADHD. It works by breaking work down into manageable 25-minute chunks separated by short breaks.
This structure provides the focus, motivation and sense of urgency that many with ADHD lack.
The timed intervals help limit distractions and hyperfocusing.
Frequent short breaks allow the ADHD brain to recharge.
Pomodoro’s system of ticking off completed chunks gives a rewarding sense of accomplishment. And having an external timer eliminates the need to self-monitor.
By catering to the ADHD brain’s need for variability, structure and rewards, the Pomodoro technique makes staying focused and productive far easier.
