TOP 10 TIPS FOR AN ORGANIZED KITCHEN
1. Purge regularly. Clutter accumulates quickly in the kitchen, so do a deep cleanout of food, dishes, and appliances you don’t use at least twice a year. Getting rid of the excess creates more storage space.
2. Categorize cabinets. Assign cabinets for dishes, food items, baking supplies, etc. Use shelf dividers, bins, and lazy susans to keep everything neat.
3. Use vertical space. Install racks inside cabinet doors to hold cutting boards, foil, spices, and other kitchen tools. You can buy them or DIY with wood strips.
4. Containerize ingredients. Use matching clear canisters to store flour, sugar, pasta, and other pantry staples. It looks uniform and you can easily see what you have. I recommend OXO products. They can be a little pricier than some other brands, but the quality is better as well as the seal on the container. It’s just made better!
5. Get a grocery bag dispenser. No more searching for bags or stuffing them in random drawers. Mount a dispenser on the wall or inside a cabinet door.
6. DIY pan lid organizer. Screw cup hooks to the inside of a cabinet and hang your pan lids by their handles. Genius!
7. Label everything. Use removable vinyl labels to mark shelves, bins, and containers. This keeps everyone in the family on track. I recommend the Brother P-Touch Cube for a label maker. It’s a game-changer!
8. Store by frequency of use. Keep everyday dishes, pots, appliances, and ingredients on lower, easier-to-access shelves. Reserve upper cabinets for occasional use items.
9. Invest in drawer organizers. Use cutlery trays, compartment dividers, and other inserts to neatly arrange utensils and tools.
10. Schedule weekly kitchen resets. Set aside 15 minutes every Sunday to toss expired food, put away dishes, and reset organization systems. Maintaining order is easier than prolonged cleanups. (Set a timer and get the whole family involved! The timer above can also be used for the Pomodoro technique – win, win! Read more about this powerful yet simple time management system HERE).
